BASINGSTOKE
Hypothetical Old English 'Basinga stoc'='dependent settlement of BASING' or
'of the Basingas'. The peculiar first form may, according to Tengstrand, include
Old English 'ef(e)n'='near', here appearing as 'em'. The form of 1086 (and
others like it) shows the common Anglo Norman apparent plural form (cf Smith,
English Place Name Elements II: 155).

Basingstoke, a good Market-Town, and a great Thorough-fare, lying in the
Western Road, forty-five Miles from London. Near it is a Brook, famous for
plenty of Trouts. It is governed by a Mayor, Recorder, seven Aldermen, seven
Burgesses, &c. and has a great Market on Wednesday weekly for Corn, especially
Barley, because its Inhabitants are many of them Malsters, of whom 'tis said,
that here is one of the richest of that Trade in England; and a Fair on
Michaelmas-Day.
Our Histories relate, that a bloody Battle was fought near this Town between
the Saxons and Danes, Anno 871.

Defoe 1724
Before we reach Basingstoke [from the east], we get rid of that unpleasant
country, which I so often call a desart [Bagshot Heath], and enter into a
pleasant fertile country, enclosed and cultivated like the rest of England; and
passing a village or two, we enter Basingstoke, in the midst of woods and
pastures, rich and fertile, and the country accordingly spread with the houses
of the nobility and gentry, as in other places: ...
Basingstoke is a large populous market town, has a good market for corn, and
lately, within a very few years, is fallen into a manufacture, viz. of making
druggets and shalloons, and such slight goods, which, however, employs a good
number of the poor people, and enables them to get their bread, which knew not
how to get it before.
